Abstract
Background: Prolotherapy is an effective treatment for the pain of patient with ligament or tendon laxity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of prolotherapy in relieving the low back pain with lumbar herniated nucleus pulposus.

Methods: The patients who complained low back pain with radiculopathy and confirmed herniated nucleus pulposus by MRI were investigated their pain score through reviewing their outpatient charts retrospectively. Group I (n=18) and II (n=5) were the patients who received and not received epidural block respectively before prolotherapy. Prolotherapy was performed using 15% dextrose to the regions according to Hackett¡¯s referral pattern. We recorded NRS (numeric rating scale) scores at just before prolotherapy and at 8 weeks after that and considered the patients effective who reduced their NRS scores one half.

Results: In overall patient, 74% of patients were effective and satisfactory (NRS; 7.5 before, 3.0 after prolotherapy): In Group I; 67% (NRS; 7.6, 3.2), Group II; 100% (NRS; 7.0, 2.4). There was no difference between two groups.

Conclusions: Prolotherapy with 15% dextrose resulted in clinically significant improvement of low back pain with herniated nucleus pulposus.
